Operating systems - We have a choice?
Most
people that buy a PC with an operating system pre installed on it will
power the computer up and happy enter the land of using. The OS does
not really matter, as long as it works and has a variety of
productivity and entertainment software. The big three; Linux, Windows
and OS X all have
these, ranging from games and Internet applications to office suites
and graphic editors.
For some, there is a little more to it, but the intent here is to put
general usability in to perspective. What you use to make all the
gadgets inside the box with the power switch work should only matter to
you. When you buy a PC with an OS pre-installed, there is usually
little reason to change it. Operating system as a service, the
direction Microsoft it heading with it's OS may change this down the
road however, so knowing choices exist is always a good thing.
I
am an OS enthusiast. I consider myself a novice however, as my skills
are based on using and minor configuration. I can build a PC and
install and configure just about any OS, set up a basic network and
share files and printers, but I don't have the skill to write
scripts or build my own Linux distribution, nor do I want said skills.
I'm a fan of Windows XP. In my opinion, other than the stupid
Activation and call-in reactivations after too many hardware upgrades,
it's the best OS out there today. Quite a few people just jumped out of
their skin reading that, but if you think about it - post SP2, XP is as
stable an OS as you could ever ask for, it does everything I need it to
do and it's user friendly without being uncontrollable. In thae last 6
years, I've never had a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). I am also a Fan
of Linux. My primary OS is PClinuxOS. In my experience, it is the best
Linux distribution when it comes to ease of use and configuration. 95%
of everything about PCLOS 2007 works without much user effort. The 5% I
had trouble with can be attributed to ATI and Compiz-Fusion. Something
that should in all fact be omitted as a problem due to the fact
Compiz-Fusion
is eye candy and still in Beta.
I
encourage you to take a look around the site. There are some OS install
guides, a little info on gOS, my own adventure in to Linux and some
very useful information on cross platform software that could aid you
if you are planning on moving to a different operating system in the
near future.
